Unox Nieuwjaarsduik 2013 (New Years Dive)
Ready to rumble!
Photo: Kevin Verkruijssen

Every year, 10.000 crazy Dutchies jump into the 7 degree water (44°F) of the North Sea to celebrate the new year! These photo were taken with my pro-underwater photo gear while wearing my drysuit. Took the plunge myself later that day just for the fun of it

A Decade of Dance

Dutch DJ’s and event organizers have been dominating the worldwide EDM scene since the beginning. Not just them, however, a select group of filmers and photographers from the lowlands are also being flown all over the world these events. Three of them will show their unique perspective on the past ten years of EDM at the 2012 edition of the Amsterdam Dance Event.

From Wednesyday, October 17th the Bacardi House in AMsterdam will host a photo and video look-back on the worldwide EDM scene of the past decade. A decade which started with the first all-night-one-DJ event (Tiësto in Concert) and consequently saw the meteoric rise of DJ stardom for the ones in the DJ MAG top 100. A decade where vinyl was replaced by memorysticks and a time where pop festivals started to fall behind in size, shows and the speed in which EDM events got sold out (Tomorrowland 2012, 100.000 tickets sold in a second).

Rutger Geerling (National Geographic) and Kevin Verkruijssen (mittnick.nl/wearethenight.com) plus video director Wilco Jung (wearethenight.com) have been active for well over ten years as photographer, filmer or director in the EDM scene. A trio with an unique perspective and access to the most spectacular angles in order to capture the atmosphere at these events. There’s hardly a continent on earth that they haven’t seen. As senior photographers for ID&T, Q-dance, Ultra Music Festival, KLM, Armin van Buuren or Tiësto the world is their workplace with places like Ibiza, Miami, Sao Paulo, Las Vegas or Sydney as regular stations. A life, perhaps, not as glamorous as that of the most famous DJ’s but hardly less interesting and with the rise of internet now available to a worldwide audience. A music-or event video on Youtube gathers millions of vies within days of posting and has become a whole new platform.

On Wednesday October 17th the photo-video exhibition “A Decade of Dance 2003-2012″ will be opened for a select group of invites in the Bacardi House 60/62 in downtown Amsterdam under the sounds of DJ’s Lucien Foort en Benjamin Bates. On Thursday 18 and Friday 19 the expo will be open to the general public.

For months the spectacular Canarian Island, El Hierro, has been under the spell of heavy volcanic activity and as we speak there are unconfirmed reports of a red glow under water near the so called “jacuzzi“. Seems there will be some extra land very soon!

The most popular diving area of the island, La Restinga, however has again been evacuated which must be a big blow to the diving community. I was there two years ago and was totally mesmerized by the place. Here are some photos from that trip (for Duikmagazine). Let’s hope things will calm down soon again.

Unox Nieuwjaarsduik 2011 (New Years Dive)

Camera failure (error 99) after 5 photos sucks big time, especially at a big photoshoot like this! Three photos came out nice though, these are two of them.

See “behind the scenes” images at my Fotograferen.net Facebook!

The Unox New Years Dive saw 10.000+ people jumping into the icecold North Sea at Scheveningen Beach in The Netherlands. A great and fun event to photograph, especially if your equipment doesn’t fail on you.

Unox Nieuwjaarsduik 2010

Unox Nieuwjaarsduik 2010

Just had to upload these two quickly, taken from the infamous Unox Nieuwjaarsduik 2010 (click here for 2008 and 2009). This year turned out the best from the three tries I’ve done so far in making these images with my drysuit and underwater camera. More shots later today or enjoy me at work (20:21) in this item at the main RTL4 News for January 1st.

Now you see me...

Always my first assignment of the year: the Unox Newyears dive in Scheveningen!
Boy, what a great way to start early on January 1st.

With the cold this years edition saw less people joining the dive (about 7.000 instead of the usuall 10.000) but was it a dive indeed: everbody waited to the last second before jumping in en masse! Never saw such a spectacular dive here, altough it was over really, really quickly: just 6 minutes and the Northsea was empty again. Jup, it was cold indeed.

Perhaps the Dutch are indeed a bit weird. In any way, we love diving into an almost freezing NorthSea at noon on newyears day. It’s called the Unox Nieuwjaarsduik. So why not bring out the trusty Canon 20D with UK-Germany housing, put on my drysuit and just wait.. till 12?
